Olympic London 2012 USA top medal table


The United States claimed two more golds on the final day of London 2012 to cement their place at the top of the medal table.
Wrestler Jake Varner defeated Ukraine's Valerii Andriitsev in the -96kg freestyle final to secure a 45th gold for the Americans and also earned himself bonus of 250,000 US dollars.
USA Wrestling promised the payment to any athlete who won gold at the ExCeL this week.
It was 46 golds shortly afterwards as the men's basketball team overcame a stern challenge from Spain to win 107-100 at the North Greenwich Arena.
It was their fifth basketball gold in six Olympic Games since the start of the 'Dream Team' era.
The United States ended the Games with a total of 104 medals, with China second on 87 - 38 golds, 27 silver and 22 bronze.
Hosts Great Britain finished third with 65 medals after super-heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua claimed their 29th gold by beating defending Olympic champion Roberto Cammarelle on countback after an 18-18 draw.

Samantha Murray also claimed silver in a modern pentathlon event won by Laura Asadauskaite of Lithuania for the final gold of the Games and the nation's second.
Russia ended strongly, winning three gold medals on day 16.
They produced a magnificent comeback to prevent Brazil from leaving London with a double in the volleyball competition.
With the Brazilian women beating the United States 3-1 in their final, the men looked on course to head to their home games in Rio in 2016 as defending champions too, opening up a 2-0 lead over Russia.

Stephen Kiprotich clinched a surprise gold medal for Uganda in the marathon on The Mall today.
It was only the country's second ever Olympic gold in athletics, with their last success coming 40 years ago when John Akii-Bua was 400 metres hurdles champion.
The 23-year-old burst past Kenyan duo Abel Kirui and Wilson Kipsang around the 38-kilometre mark to leave his two rivals trailing, crossing the line in two hours, eight minutes and one second.
And France wrote themselves into the history books after becoming the first country to retain the Olympic title in men's handball following a nervy one-goal victory in the final against Sweden.
Les Bleus, who won gold in Beijing four years ago and are also reigning world champions, survived a late Scandinavian comeback to cement their place as the greatest team of all time.
France ended the Games with 11 golds, 11 silver and 12 bronze medals.
